INTRODUCTION
All human societies, past and present have had vested cheer in gentility; and some wits have claimed that precept (at its best an educational activity) is the second oldest profession. While not all societies, Nigeria for example, channel sufficient resources into support for educational activities and institutions, all at the very least acknowledge their centrality. It is not surprising that this favorable domain of knowledge has attracted the attention of philosophers over the years with regards to the hard issues that turn up which have great philosophical interests. Problems continually arise to question the influence of education on the individual and the ordering. Is the programme of any pragmatic importance to the individual and the society? In a pluralistic society such as Nigeria, how has the educational system help to promote a homogeneous society?
It may interest us at this juncture to create by mental act what we connote as philosophy of education and to expound on its importance to Nigeria vis-a-vis building a free and elective society. The concept philosophy does not lend itself to easy definition, so also does the concept of education. All we can provide is a working definition. Philosophy can be defined as the critical study of fundamental ideas of life and existence.
To study implies inquiry; to learn that which is basic of the subject and to think through the subject. However, education in its broadest sense as John dewey puts it is the societal pertinacity of life (Dewey, 1916:3). By this Dewey pointed out that education is a social process whereby elders (through the help of teachers) instructs the young (who is illiterate) of the societal norms and culture.
