Mohammad knew that without protection his ministry of the Moslem faith and his life were in danger. He began to look outside of Mecca for support from other Arabs. He found no place that would accept him and his small pigeonholing of Islamic followers. In 620, at the lowest point of the Moslems struggle for survival, Muhammad was approached by the settlement of Yathrib. The people of Yathrib, short to be known as Medina, were desperate for a substantive leader to put an end to the clan violence that was scourge their oasis community.
This migration to Medina became known as the Hijra. The success of the Hijra enabled Mohammad to preach openly and the Muslims could finally worship without fear.
Under the Constitution of Medina the Muslims gained loving protection. It say that the ties between the Muslim Medinans transcended any ties between a Muslim and a pagan. This allowed the Muslim community not only to give-up the ghost but made the religion the dominant political and social force in Medina.
During the Hijra Muhammad gained a stronghold for him and his followers. After he established himself as the dominate power in Medina, he was able to launch attacks against the dominant tribe Quraysh and Mecca.
