Extract Question

This particular choice is taken from act one. The significance of the deplume shows how Mr. Birling was involved in Eva Smiths death and how he conduct the chain of events.
Throughout this extract I will come across how Mr. Birling speaks and behaves here and what this reveals about his character.
The extract is from after the inspector has shown Mr. Birling a photograph of Eva in which he admits to recognizing her. Birling tells the inspector the point of Eva and why he dismissed her from work. He says they involveed the pass judgment raised however he refused, of course. Birling did what any other business man would do at the time. He says this as if it was normal to refuse what they wanted but he doesnt realise what he has done could have led to Eva Smiths death.
The inspector answers back to Birling in which he replies I dont like that shade this implies that Birling is of a high status and he isnt used to people talking to him rudely. He is shocked in the way how the inspector talks to him as he asked him an unnecessary question. He then goes on to say well, its my duty to moderate labour costs down, this shows his indignation towards the inspector and it also shows the way the inspector has deliberately do Birling tell him everything he needs to know.

Birling tells Eric to keep out of this, which shows that he knows Eric is right and he is wrong but cant admit it. He also tells Eric assault! after he says you could have kept her on or else of throwing her out. He doesnt try to others opinions but wants others to listen to his. He believes he is right and others are wrong.
From the end of the extract he asks the inspector how do you get on with our nous Constable, Colonel Roberts. Mr. Birling is a well known man in Brumley so he has a high status and tries to restrict the inspector by telling him about the Chief Constable.
